Jewellery Care Guide
How to Care for Your 18K Gold Plated Jewellery
Gold plated jewellery is beautiful, affordable and designed to be worn and enjoyed. With a little care and attention, you can keep your pieces looking their best for longer. Here's what you need to know.
1. Keep It Dry
Remove your jewellery before swimming, showering, washing your hands, or any activity involving water. Prolonged moisture exposure will cause the gold plating to fade and wear off more quickly.
2. Avoid Chemicals
Take your jewellery off before applying perfume, body lotion, sunscreen, or hairspray. These products contain chemicals that dull the plating over time. A good rule of thumb: jewellery goes on last when getting ready, and comes off first.
3. Clean Gently
After wearing, give your pieces a gentle wipe with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth to remove any oils or residue. If needed, use a cloth lightly dampened with warm water and a tiny amount of mild dish soap — then pat completely dry. Never scrub or use abrasive materials.
4. Store Properly
Store each piece separately in a soft pouch or the box it came in to avoid scratching. Keep jewellery away from direct sunlight, heat, and humidity — a cool, dry drawer is ideal. Airtight pouches or zip-lock bags can help slow down natural wear.
5. Avoid Abrasion
Remove your jewellery before exercising, sleeping, or doing household tasks. Contact with hard surfaces and friction will wear down the plating faster.
6. Avoid Extreme Temperatures
Don't leave your jewellery in direct sunlight, on a hot windowsill, or in cold, damp environments. Extreme temperatures can affect the plating and the base metal underneath.
7. Rotate Your Pieces
Try not to wear the same piece every single day. Rotating your jewellery spreads the wear more evenly and keeps each piece looking fresher for longer.
8. Know When to Re-plate
All gold plated jewellery will naturally show wear over time — this is normal and expected. If a piece starts to lose its lustre, a reputable local jeweller can re-plate it for you, giving it a new lease of life.
Remember: gold plated jewellery rewards a little care. Keep it dry, keep it clean, and store it well — and it will stay beautiful.
